A pirogue trip of approximately 10 minutes will take you to Albina, the number one town in Surinam.
Surinam is well worth a visit if you are staying in western French Guiana.
Paramaribo, the capital, is a successful blend of colonial remains and modernity.
How do you get there?
Trips to Albina leave from the Bac International (international ferry port) of Saint Laurent du Maroni, and you can also take a pirogue from the same port.
Once you are in Albina, to get to Paramaribo you have to take a shared or private taxi, unless you have your own car. It is a 175 km trip between Albina and Paramaribo.
As well as your passport, a visa or tourist card will be required at the border checkpoint of Saint Laurent du Maroni, and at Albina for the return trip!
+ Pirogue Prices
One-way trip: €5/passenger
For all crossings, it is ESSENTIAL and COMPULSORY to obtain a tourist card or visa. You can obtain one from the Consulate General of Surinam, 26 A rue Justin Catayée (at the corner of rue Justin Catayée and rue Lt Colonel Tourtet) in Saint Laurent du Maroni. Alternatively, you can apply for one at the Consulate of Surinam in Cayenne.
How do I apply for a tourist card?
A tourist card can be obtained for a maximum of 90 days and is valid for a single use.
All you need to apply are:
• A valid passport (with 6 months’ validity)
• Copy of a valid vaccination card
• Payment of €37 (by bank card only)
The tourist card is issued by the Consulate on the same day.
